How to Fish the Spider Crab Boss

How to Fish spider crab boss guide: summon the first boss with an empty beer can, bait its charge, punish the dizzy stun, and win the keys to the boat.

Updated 2026-09-025 min read

To beat the How to Fish spider crab boss, feed the Lighthouse Keeper a beer and fish with the empty can to summon it. Arm a knife or brass knuckles, then bait its charge, sidestep, and strike during the dizzy stun window. Hand the shell to the Keeper to earn the boat keys.

Where to find the Spider Crab

The Spider Crab is the first boss in How to Fish, and beating it is the only way off the starting island at the Lighthouse, which most guides count as Island 1. The Lighthouse Keeper is the first NPC you meet, and his opening quest asks you to deal with the "long-legged creature" that has been stealing his beer. That creature is the Spider Crab, and it lives in the water right by the Lighthouse.

You cannot stumble into this fight by accident. The boss only appears when you summon it with one specific lure, so you can take as long as you like catching fish, earning money, and gearing up first. That is exactly what you should do, because the crab hits hard enough to end an unprepared run in seconds.

How to summon the Spider Crab (the beer can)

Summoning the boss is a short errand chain before it is a fight. Work through it in order:

  1. Catch crabs or shrimp with your basic lure and sell them to the Lighthouse Keeper until you have at least $12.
  2. Buy a can of beer for $12 from the Keeper.
  3. Give the beer to the Keeper. He drinks it on the spot and hands back the empty can, which works as a special lure.
  4. Equip the empty Beer Can on your rod and cast into the water by the Lighthouse.

With the empty can equipped, the Spider Crab bite is guaranteed, with no randomness involved. That also means you should not cast until you are genuinely ready, because the boss comes out swinging the moment it is hooked.

Gear up first: knife or brass knuckles

Do not fight the crab with your bare hands on a solo run. A real weapon is the single biggest difference between a clean kill and a grind, so spend a little time at the Lighthouse first. Here are the costs worth knowing:

ItemCost (as of 2026-09-02)Purpose
Basic Fishing Rod$3Your first purchase
Clam~$3 eachFeed the Keeper for cash, or eat to heal
Can of beer$12Traded for the empty-can lure
Brass Knuckles$24Cheaper melee option
Knife$45Stronger melee option
Knife sharpening$14Raises the knife's damage
Radar$10Optional pickup before you sail

The weapon choice is where guides split, and both camps clearly work. Most recommend the Knife ($45) and sharpening it for $14 to push its damage higher. PC Gamer points to the cheaper Brass Knuckles ($24) as a budget alternative, and the Steam achievement guide beats the boss with Brass Knuckles upgraded to max sharpness. Either one is a huge upgrade over fists, and in co-op the crab is beatable with fists alone. Before you cast, eat until your health is full and keep a fish or clam in your inventory to heal mid-fight, because three or four claw hits are enough to kill you.

How to beat the Spider Crab: bait the charge

The whole fight revolves around one move. Stay close enough that the crab commits to a charge attack, then move sideways before the charge connects. After a missed charge the boss becomes dizzy, with stars spinning above its head, and stands still for a short time.

That stun is your only safe damage window. Run behind the crab, land two or three hits, then back off before it recovers, and repeat: bait the charge, sidestep, punish the dizzy window, reset. If your health dips, eat a fish and keep going. One positioning rule matters more than any other: do not run too far away. At long range the crab starts jumping toward you instead of charging, which is slower and much harder to control, so stay at medium range where it keeps using the charge you know how to punish.

One habit to unlearn early: this stun window is unique to the first boss. Later bosses do not stun when you hit them, so do not build a playstyle around standing still to trade blows.

Watch the escape timer

The white bar beneath the Spider Crab's health bar is an escape timer. If it empties before you kill the boss, the crab disappears and you have to start the encounter over from another beer can. Community testing puts the timer at about 180 seconds.

The pressure is real, but do not let it bait you into bad play. Standing in front of the boss to trade damage just to finish faster is how people die here. Keep attacking during every safe stun window and the damage adds up well inside the timer.

Rewards: the shell and the boat keys

Beating the crab is not the end of the quest. Pick up what it leaves and carry it to the Lighthouse Keeper. Most guides call this drop the shell, and it is what actually buys the boat keys; the wiki instead describes handing over the crab's meat or parts, and one video calls the pickup meat chunks. Whatever your game labels it, that is the quest item, and delivering it is what completes the Keeper's quest and earns you the keys to his boat, finally unlocking travel. The kill also pops the 'Who Stole My Beer' achievement, one of the game's 28.

Before you sail off, consider buying the Radar for $10, a cheap and useful pickup. Your next stop is the Forest, where the Giant Piranha is on the menu.

All bosses in order

There are ten bosses and mini-bosses in How to Fish, and the Spider Crab is the first. This is the full progression order with the item that summons each fight and the trophy it drops. Fights with their own guides are linked.

The Old Pike and Goblin Shark are optional mini-bosses, and nothing in the story points you at the Goblin Shark, whose $5,800 lure is the most expensive summon in the game. For per-boss tactics across the whole roster, head to the bosses hub. How to Fish supports online co-op for up to 8 players, and the Spider Crab is comfortably beatable with a friend on fists alone.

Prices here are snapshots from co-op runs drawn from guides written around patch 1.0.4, with the wiki tracking patch 1.0.9 as of late August 2026. Treat live in-game values as the final word when a number differs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I summon the Spider Crab?

Catch crabs or shrimp with your basic lure and sell them to the Lighthouse Keeper until you have $12, buy a can of beer, and give it to him. He drinks it and hands back the empty can, which you equip as bait on your rod. Casting the empty can guarantees the Spider Crab bite.

Knife or brass knuckles for the Spider Crab?

Most guides recommend the Knife ($45 as of 2026-09-02), sharpened for $14 more damage. PC Gamer names the cheaper Brass Knuckles ($24) as the budget pick, and the achievement guide beats the crab with maxed Brass Knuckles. Either beats bare fists; in co-op some players win with fists alone.

What is the white bar under the Spider Crab's health?

It is an escape timer. If it empties before you kill the boss, the Spider Crab despawns and you have to summon it again. Community testing puts it around 180 seconds, so keep farming the stun windows and do not stall.

The Spider Crab is dead but the quest is stuck. Why?

You have to deliver the drop. Pick up what the crab leaves, most guides call it the shell, and hand it to the Lighthouse Keeper. Only then does he give you the boat keys that unlock travel off the starting island.

Do I lose anything if the Spider Crab kills me?

You keep your rod and your weapon. The only cost is another $12 beer can, since the empty can is consumed each attempt. Save up, feed the Keeper a fresh beer, and try again with more food on hand.
