How to Fish Endangered Creatures

How to Fish endangered creatures explained: a status flag, not a rarity. Spot them with F, catch them on the $15 Standard Lure, and trade one for the Carrot.

In How to Fish, endangered creatures are a status the game flags on certain species you catch, separate from the Drip system and able to stack with it. Inspect a catch with F to confirm the Endangered Species tag, land them on the $15 Standard Lure, then sell them or trade one to the tourist for the Carrot.

What "endangered" actually means

In How to Fish, "endangered" is a status the game stamps on certain species the moment you reel them in — not a rarity tier and not a skin. When an endangered creature comes up, the game flags it on screen, and killing it hands you a small bonus on top of the usual catch. Because the status is tied to specific species rather than a random roll, you are fishing for a category the game already recognizes, not gambling on luck.

That status is completely separate from the Drip system, and the two can stack. A single fish can be both endangered and Drip at once, which is fine: Drip variants respawn, so nothing is lost if you hand an endangered-and-Drip catch to the tourist. Keep the two ideas apart — endangered is a species flag with an on-kill bonus and a quest use, while Drip is a rare, rainbow-named variant you feed into the Reel of Fortune for weapon skins.

How to spot an endangered creature

There is no separate menu that lists endangered fish, so you confirm the status on the catch itself. Hold the creature in your hand and press F to inspect it; if it qualifies, the game prints "Endangered Species" at the bottom of the readout. You must have the fish in hand for the label to show. A strange-looking or hard-to-catch fish is not automatically endangered — only the F inspection tells you for sure.

The Tab encyclopedia is the companion tool. It tracks every creature in the game, with Drip variants listed separately, and shows what you are still missing, though not where to find it or which entries are endangered. Use F to verify a single catch on the spot, and use Tab to see the shape of your overall collection. Between the two you never have to guess whether the fish in your hand counts.

How to catch them with the Standard Lure

The confirmed tool is the pink Standard Lure ($15 as of v1.0.4). Equip it on the basic Fishing Rod and keep casting; the lure decides what you catch, not the island you stand on, so any Standard Lure catch can come up flagged. In practice you will be fishing at the Desert (Island 3 in the guides that start counting at the Lighthouse), because that is where the tourist who wants an endangered fish is waiting. The Standard Lure pool includes Catfish, Bluegill, Yellow Boxfish, Angelfish, Needlefish and Sea Urchin, and the species you want surface from that same pool.

The moment a catch is flagged, treat it as a quest item, not as money or food. Do not cook it, sell it or eat it — carry it back intact. The Needlefish is the species most guides point to because it is extremely light (0.0001 weight) and easy to hand over, but the Bowl Fish and Sea Horse work exactly the same way. Land any one of the three with the endangered marker and you are done fishing; there is no need to keep hunting for a specific name.

What endangered creatures are worth

Endangered creatures give you two payoffs: the small on-kill bonus, and a solid sell value once you cook and sell the ones you are not saving for a quest. The table below lists confirmed endangered species and their raw sell prices, recorded against version 1.0.4 (24 August 2026). Prices drift between patches, so treat these as a guide and confirm the live number with F in your own game.

Endangered creatureWeightSell value (as of v1.0.4)
Mutated Bowhead Whale500$15,000
Bowhead Whale12,000$8,000
Tigerfish2$310
Bing Bong5$300
Sea Urchin2$52
Sunfish84$50
Piranha2$4

The two whales sit far above everything else, so an endangered catch you were only going to sell is worth cooking to its 1.5x value first. Values here were recorded on a v1.0.4 save and are the part most likely to change after a patch. For the full lure-by-lure catch list and how Drip farming fits in, see the Fish & Bait hub.

Trading one to the tourist: the Carrot and Vacation

The best-known use for an endangered creature is the tourist on the Desert island. He will not go swimming until you deal with a "scary fish," and he only accepts an endangered catch in return for his bait. Hand him a flagged Needlefish, Bowl Fish or Sea Horse and his quest, "Vacation" ("Help the tourist swim on his vacation"), completes — which also pops the Vacation achievement.

In exchange he gives you the Carrot, the bait that summons the Pufferfish boss. The Carrot is a progression item, not food and not something to sell, and it is consumed on each attempt, so if you lose the fight you have to catch and trade another endangered fish for a fresh one. Once the Carrot is in your inventory the endangered-creature hunt is over; from there, the fight itself is covered on the Pufferfish boss page.

Endangered versus Drip, and common mistakes

It is easy to conflate the two systems, so hold onto the distinction: endangered is a species flag with an on-kill bonus and the tourist quest, while Drip is a collectible rainbow variant for the Reel of Fortune. They overlap freely, and because Drip variants respawn, turning in an endangered-and-Drip fish costs you nothing on the collection side.

Most problems on this quest come from ignoring the flag, not from bad luck. If the tourist will not accept your catch, inspect it again with F before assuming a bug — a rare-looking fish, a hard catch or a Drip variant is not automatically endangered. And if your hunger is low, eat something else first, because the one mistake that really hurts is cooking or selling the exact endangered fish you needed and starting the search over.

Frequently asked questions

What are endangered creatures in How to Fish?

They are specific species the game flags as Endangered Species when you catch them, and killing one hands you a small bonus. It is a status tied to certain fish, not a rarity tier and not a skin, so you are fishing for a category the game already recognizes.

How do I know if a fish is endangered?

Hold the creature and press F to inspect it. If it qualifies, the readout shows Endangered Species at the bottom. You must have the fish in hand for the label to appear, and a rare-looking or hard-to-catch fish is not endangered unless that tag shows.

Which lure catches endangered fish?

The pink Standard Lure ($15 as of v1.0.4). Its pool includes Needlefish, Bowl Fish and Sea Horse, the three species confirmed to work for the tourist. Keep casting it and inspect every catch with F until one reads endangered, then keep that fish intact.

What do endangered creatures do?

Two things. They give a small on-kill bonus and sell for cash once cooked, and one flagged fish trades to the tourist on the Desert island for the Carrot, the bait that summons the Pufferfish boss. Handing one over also unlocks the Vacation achievement.

Are endangered creatures the same as Drip creatures?

No. Endangered is a species flag with an on-kill bonus and the tourist quest; Drip is a rare rainbow variant you feed into the Reel of Fortune for skins. A single fish can be both at once, and because Drip variants respawn, turning in an endangered-and-Drip catch costs you nothing.
